Community Service Club

The Bayou Academy Community Service Club is an organization that provides service work to the school and to the community.  The club has provided many contributions of help and effort to the school, including at events such as the Halloween Carnival, the Harvest Festival, and softball and basketball games.  Club members traditionally design and decorate a haunted house for the annual carnival.  They host a fundraising booth at the Harvest Festival every year, and the club’s members volunteer in the ticket booths and concession stands of softball and basketball games throughout the year.  The Patrons’ League especially appreciates the Community Service Club’s participation in the concession stands of the school ball games.

The Community Service Club, of course, also donates time and work to the community.  The club helps with crafts at the local nursing home and decorates the windows for the respective holidays.  The club’s specialty, however, is, by far, pet therapy---an event held every Friday during which club members travel to the local nursing home with several pets, such as dogs, rabbits, and ferrets.  The students carry the animals through the facility, stopping by each patient’s room to see if anyone of them would like to see or pet the animals.  Sometimes just the sight of the animals or just the wonderfully enthused expression on the students’ faces is enough to brighten the patients’ day.  In addition, the Community Service Club also holds an annual toy drive during Christmas, a time when they also adopt “angels,” the children of inmates to whom they give gifts of clothes and toys, and they decorate the Christmas tree at the local hospital.  This year, the Community Service Club is also hosting a raffle for a Valentine’s Day raffle as a fundraiser.  The Community Service Club also hopes to complete many new projects in the remainder of the school year.  In addition to the many projects on the agenda, the Community Service Club will also be helping with the city-wide food drive.  Each member will donate five canned goods and $1.00 to help  the Cleveland community.  The club will also be taking donations of dog food, cat food, and other pet supplies to donate to the Cleveland Animal Shelter.  The club will also be helping at the Robinson-Carpenter Library with the "Friends of the Library."
